Easy Breezy Modern Farmhouse Summer Tour
Hi there & welcome to my easy, breezy modern farmhouse summer tour! The biggest thank you to Nina Hendricks & Country Living for hosting this incredible round-up of tours this week. If you are coming from Cami’s blog, I am so happy you stopped by!
My name is Jen & I have been sharing my modern take on farmhouse living on this blog for about 4 years now. I live on the east end of Long Island with my outdoor lovin’ family, my husband John & 2 boys, Shane 11 & Jack 6. Living coastally has some great advantages, especially in the summer, so I thought it might also be fun to share a little about what we like to do for fun, along with some simple updates I did to my home for summer.
Our family room is the main hub of the home and it is our only living space on the bottom floor. This year I wanted our home to feel easy, so I used a lot of what I had and added some plants, the green plays really well with the blues and of course couldn’t pass up a few new accessories from Target.
To me, modern farmhouse style has always felt interpretational and authentic to whom the house belongs. It’s a fresh twist on farmhouse that is layered in chic simplicity. It can be a mixture of design sensibilities that add up to one beautiful and personal story of home.
I have let go of perfect recently in the efforts to spend more time with my family. I like a pretty house but it’s more important that it is lived in and loved. I know it may not seem this way but to be honest it is rare my house looks like this. Just like you would get dressed up for a nice family picture, that is what these tours are, showing the better sides of your home all dressed up.
I used my favorite pillows to make it feel coastal and fun. I bought hand dyed Indigo pillows a few months back, which I adore and layered in some texture along with this beautiful wool pillow and my DIY Sharpie Pillow.
The tassel pillow is from Birch Lane and looks right at home with the mix of blues and pattern. My leather chair I have had for about 5 months and I LOVE it, it is the most comfortable chair and not to mention mess proof with the boys.
You can shop the look below, although I have tried my best some items are not exact….
Our dining room is right off the kitchen, I wish I could say we ate in here every night because I love this space to pieces but we don’t. But on the occasions when we do this is my vision for the space. This room is bright & happy and the views of the bay from both windows always inspire me.
This botanical print is actually not a print at all. I saw one online at Urban Outfitters but thought I could DIY one much cheaper. I found a palm leaf at the grocery store, pressed it for a few days and then sprayed adhesive to the back & attached it to oak tag, the frame is from IKEA. Simple right?

This is our mudroom off the back door, I just finish this sweet project of my boys at the beach. I am now greeted each day with this beautiful picture that instantly makes me smile and warms my heart.
My front porch is a favorite spot in the summer for sure. I get up really early, before anyone else & sit out here with my coffee, I take it all in before the day starts. The bay is quiet and peaceful & birds are singing away, it’s hard not to be happy and grateful when the day begins this way.
There is not much new out here except for my hanging chair, some plants and the baskets. The aqua baskets I bought last fall on clearance at the West Elm Outlet, I wasn’t sure where I would use them but I couldn’t pass up the price. Baskets are great for hanging on the wall and make for an ideal summer vignette.

I recently revealed by backyard, which was quite horrendous when we began. I am so grateful to have a place to eat dinner & spend time chit-chatting by the fire.

This winter I was busy with a few makeovers. I decided it was time for my boys’ rooms to get some much-needed big boy changes. Jack’s room now has a modern coastal vibe with a mix of painted furniture, DIY iPhone art, lots of texture & wood tones with some fun seaside touches all against a white backdrop. I was going to paint a wall treatment but I am so happy I kept things simple.

In Shane’s room, I went for a modern rustic feel and added some cool features as he heads into his pre-teen years. I gave him a loft bed with a sofa under, changed the lighting{LOVE}, mixed urban with vintage and gave him plenty of seating.

We live right across from the bay so just about every day my husband is out there on the paddleboard or windsurfer. My boys like to join him in a little SUP, they head over to the other shore and explore. I have started myself, although I am not very good, hoping to get better this summer.
Here is our beach hideaway, our home away from home….

Such a gorgeous home tour! I’m dying to know where you got your outdoor dining table? The white washed farm table. I couldn’t find a source for it. Thanks so much!
Hi Haley, it is from Joss & Main but it sold out a while ago, so sorry;). Thank you so much! Jen
Beautiful! Everything!! Where are your brass mud room hooks from?
What a stunning home! I love every space. 🙂 Would you mind sharing where your sectional is from? We’re in the market for one ourselves and yours looks perfect.
Hi Shannon, it is actually from Ikea, if you can believe it. Its the Ektorp with a slipcover from Comfort Works. Thank you so much!
Hi! Love this look. I have been hesitant to buy the EKTORP thinking the slip cover may not be best quality. But really cant beat this price for the look. I noticed how nice yours looks and realized you ordered else where. Have you found that brand (comfort-works) to be a better brand and fit? Thanks!
