I Painted My French Doors Black + What TikTok Had To Say
Well, I did it. I finally had the guts to paint my beautiful white French doors black. Sometimes it’s the smallest risks that yields the greatest reward. Although it took me a while to actually do it, it is just paint at the end of the day. Right?! The leap paid off, I’m smitten.
This was the before. You can see, they’re classic and crisp, ideal for a beachy vibe. But… I was looking for a change.
I had a ton of questions about paint color, what I used to prevent the paint from getting on the glass and how many coats.
After a lot of paint research I went with Sherwin-Williams Black Magic. I used Masking Liquid for the glass. You paint it on and then exacto knife it off after painting. It will actually peel off the glass. FYI, apply a good coat, it will be easier to peel. I found it at Sherwin-Williams, all the other stores were sold out.
I painted half at a time, just in case I changed my mind. Also, it gave a better visual. I bought a paint with a built in primer, so for the most part it was 2 coats of the Black Magic in the pearl finish.
I decide the best way to tackle the frame was to only paint the inset details. Which I then left the molding white. It was a good call.
It’s very dramatic. And yes, I know that this trend may end soon like my white kitchen. But, the important thing with trends is that if you like it that’s all that matters.
Taking small risks are contagious, check out what I did with my Billy Bookcase from Ikea.
Okay, so after posting it to TikTok it went viral, which was really nice since I’m trying to grow on that platform. But… everyone had a lot to say about… my door knobs. Yes, you read correct. You have to check out some of the comments, they were actually fighting with one another in the thread.
At the end of the day, I like the glass knobs. I may rub gold on the silver areas but I will take my time with it. And that’s okay. I’ve learned over the years that not being in a rush saves time & money.
What do you think? In cased you missed my FALL TOUR, you can hop on over and check out the details in my den.

Jen, the doors look gorgeous! That is some tedious painting, but wow, what an impact! I love how the black really pops in your light and airy space, but it ties in with a few other black accents you have in the living room. Great work.
Thanks Erin!! It took a lot of time but so happy with them!
Can’t talk, too busy swooning…
Ha, thank you Valarie!
OH MY WORD – THAT LOOKS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I LOVE IT. MAKES THE ROOM LOOK SO COSY.

It took, A WHILE… but so worth it;). Thank you Eileen!
This looks absolutely beautiful- it adds the perfect touch to the space. I have been wanting to paint mine for quite some time, but with 7 sets of double doors & 7 singles- it’s not going to happen- but oh, i am so in love with how they look in black!
Thanks Liz! It takes time, when the time is right you’ll be so excited!
II love the black doors. Makes the entire room pop! I am going to try painting my doors with SS black Fox. A dark brown leaning into black. My question is what color are your walls in this room?
They are Pure White by SW:). Thank you Deb!
I had those same doorknobs, but gold, in our last house…still love them. I still love them! The doors look great!
Oops, my husband distracted me, DIDN’T mean To repeat myself!🤣
Hi Paula, I actually like them, I think the gold rub will do the trick but the glass is a nice contrast.
Great decision! I painted 2 of my living room walls black in 2005. Still best DECORATING choice I’ve Made. Everything pips and up LIGHTING is magical.
Black is so classic Kay:)
Such a great article
Tiktok COMMENTS NOT SHOWING UP ON THEIR WEBSITE. MAYBE THAT’S INTENTIONAL. DO LIKE THE BLACK DOORS, CONSIDERING IT. I DO ALREADY HAVE INTERIOR BLACK FRONT AND PATIO DOOR.
Love black as it makes a room get a LITTLE bossy. Doorknobs are just BEAUTIFUL
