Paper Mache Pumpkins For Under $5
Ever since my last paper mache project, I’ve been itching to do another. The last time I made the viral bowls, they were sold on Anthropologie and Studio McGee. They ranged online from $20 to $45 each, and I made three for under $5. What I love about paper mache is that it gives a unique texture and is SO CHEAP! Not to mention cathartic to make. So, when the end of summer rolled around, I thought it would be fun to make paper mache pumpkins.
I love three things about this project: it was easy, took less than an hour, and was very inexpensive—less than a coffee at Starbucks, as I mentioned above. It brings me back to elementary art class, and I’m here for it all!
You’ll need one roll of toilet paper, flour, glue, salt, paint(optional), and some sort of twig for the stem. Oh, and a knife. I thought string would work best for making the lines on the sides, but sometimes, simple is best.
I used Folk Art Cinnamon paint, about half the tube, maybe a little more. The paint ate most of the budget, so use your coupon or what you already have. I used house paint the last time I made the bowls.
First, unroll your toilet paper roll and soak it in water for about 30 minutes. Then strain it well and add 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of glue, 3 tbs salt, 1.5 oz paint, and a few twigs or pieces of driftwood. Knead the mixture until the color is even. Scoop out ball-like sizes and mold them into a circle, then flatten them to the shape of small pumpkins. Once you have your desired shape, make long dives into the sides with a knife to mimic a pumpkin’s surface.
It’s so easy and fun. This would be a great art project with the kiddos!

Happy making friends! Enjoy the rest of your week!
The actual instructions don’t explain what role the toilet paper plays in making the pumpkins. Am I missing something?
Hi Debra, I am so sorry, it’s there now. You soak the toilet paper in water and strain. Then add the other ingredients. Have a wonderful weekend, Jen
Would you share a few more details? Do you cut up the toilet paper or just take it off the roll, do you soak it first, how long do the pumpkins need to dry, etc. Also, do you have an actual tutorial for the bowls? I’d love to make one!
Hi Rebecca, sure. You’ll unroll a roll of toilet paper and add it to a bowl of water. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and strain. Then add it to the other ingredients. Have a nice weekend! Jen
