Rustic Chic Budget Friendly Master Makeover
Hi friends! I am so excited to FINALLY be sharing with you my Rustic Chic Budget Friendly Master Bedroom Makeover! The space is being featured in this months-Feb BHG issue!! If you haven’t seen it yet but sure to be on the look out, it should hit stores this week. Can I tell you, I was like a little kid all last week, running to the mailbox each time filled with such excitement & anticipation. Definitely the best day professionally for me to open up those pages & see my home. I will never forget the feeling, ever!
Everyone always asks where do I begin with a room. Often the answer is different for each space. When we moved in 4 years ago{exactly} I picked all my paint & painted each room first before really knowing design wise where I would go but I knew my style & the colors I loved. The wall color is Valspar- Beach. It reminded me of tones I would see at dusk along the beach, perfect name, don’t ya think?
For 3 years the room was just painted with a headboard that didn’t match & a duvet that had seen better days. And tons of toys in & out of the room. We tackled the other common areas first & waited until we had the money to tackle this room.
This is the before color, which is nice but I wanted more of a neutral tone.
And this was the headboard & wall before the transformation. My original headboard was in a red & gold chenille from Calico Corners, so as a temporary solution I decided to take a sheet I liked & do a quick slipcover. That “temporary” situation lasted 2 years, lol:). It is amazing when you have extra money you can always find other things to spend it on, hence the long wait.
And the after….
These side tables I found in my basement. I loved the x design and knew I would eventually use them. They were bought at Target on clearance for a ridiculously low price. I added a base to the bottom for storage and added casters for height. The paint color is Benjamin Moore-Stormy Sky. The baskets I taped off & spray painted to give a color blocked look.
The herringbone wall treatment was easy. I love pattern but despise removing wallpaper {once you have taken it down more than a few times yourself you seek out other options:)}. I measured the wall, found the middle and began drawing my lines. After which I taped it off & used a leftover white for the stripe detail. I love how it turned out & when I get tired of it I can just lightly sand & paint over it.
The headboard fabric is discontinued. I found it at a local fabric store, I kept coming back to it. A {discontinued}persimmon floral was not what I had in mind for this room but I can’t imagine any other fabric now. It is absolutely perfect & a chance worth taking, my small risk paid off, yay!
I wanted the room to feel peaceful & bright, so I chose crisp white bed linens.
This color on the side tables, lovely right? And my favorite home design book-The Nesting Place, it is honest and so beautifully written by The Nester.
The drapery rods are made by just simply stringing jute through eye hooks & securing them to large cleats. My RH Outlet linen panels were a steal at $20 per panel.
DIY Feather Art found HERE.
Layering textures makes the room feel warm & cozy.
This room gets an insane amount of natural light. It is my favorite room in my house & a place I treasure. The best time is in the morning on the weekends when my boys come in to snuggle with us{because my comforter is sooo warm}. When I open the shades & see the sun come up over the bay, honestly there is nothing better.

This was my original design plan, more updates to come like my driftwood chandelier and large rustic floor mirror, so stay tuned.

Thank you Christine!!
Ooh, I likey! I was eyeing the same bench over at TJ Maxx. I was unsure about it because of the gray (I want it in a sand-colored fabric), but seeing it in your space is making me reconsider…
It is a great piece! Thank you so much Ginet!
stunningly cozy!
Thank you Lisa!!!
Such a lovely room, and how exciting is it for you to have it featured in BHG! I love the mix of colors, really mostly neutral, but the pop of persimmon!
Thank you so much Chloe!
Read BH&G yesterday at the dentist’s office. Your house looks even more beautiful!
Congrats. again!
I absolutely love your wall! Is there a tutorial? I’d like to do this to my bedroom wall ASAP, leaving the background color as is. Any easy way to do the white stripes? I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!
Just got my issue! It looks amazing!!
I love the desk – where did you get this?
I loved your feature in BHG. Can you tell me where the roman shades are from? I’m having such a hard time finding an affordable option. Thanks!!
Thank you Christina! They are from Levalor:).

Hi Jen, I love this. How thick did you do the white stripes?
Hi Danielle, They are 9″. Thank you!!! Jen
Oh i’m sorry, i meant the thin white stripes. Are they 3/8 ” or 1/2″ or 1″. They just seem a lot thinner than 9″
Amazing makeover! Great job! The bedroom looks fantastic! Thumbs up! Greets, Storage Farringdon Ltd.
IDo you have a name brand on the tuffed grey bench from home goods? I’m in love!
Thanks Stephanie
How thin did you do you white stripes? The thinnest I can find is .94 tape.
That should work Laurin, try a small area and see. Mine are 5/8″ but they are painted. Good Luck!!
Jen, this is one of the most beautiful and coziest rooms I have ever seen. I really like the combination of neutral palette with pops of warm read as well as warm texture of the wooden details. You did an amaaaazing job 🙂
It’s always nice to bring a little bit of nature indoors, don’t you think? I’m definitely not talking bugs and critters, but I am talking textiles and textures. Definitely it’s a comfortable, bright and splendid bedroom. I don’t want to say not only thanks but also expect more gorgeous post from JEN.
