Nancy Meyers Aesthetic-Get The Look In 12 Steps
If you’re a home and movie enthusiast with a penchant for spaces that tell a story, then you know about Nancy Meyers and her unique interior style. And if you are in the know about her aesthetic, then you’re most likely also well-versed with her movies. Just to name a few, we have The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give, Home Again, and who could forget Jane’s (Meryl Streep’s) kitchen (and yard) in It’s Complicated.

I have to admit, I’ve been a fan since The Father of the Bride. That white colonial with black shutters had me at hello at the ripe age of eighteen. And I was obsessed ever since. There are movies that you watch over and over again, and she has cornered the market on watchable movies. They make you feel, they make you want to dream, and they inspire. But what makes her style so unique? Let’s dive in.
1. Her use of fabrics is remarkable. It’s often lush and/or light, but she’s not afraid to mix contrasting fabrics with high texture and subtle patterns. Think linen, soft cotton, velvet, chenille, soft florals, stripes, and even damask and matelasse.
2. Sisal, seagrass, rattan, cane, or any other natural fibers are always present. It can be a rug, future, lighting, etc. But it’s always there.

3. Drapes that hang above the window frame. The minimum is 6″ to as much as 18-24″ above. It all depends on the height of your ceilings. A good tip is to not go above half the space between the frame and ceiling. There are exceptions to that. If you have short ceilings, then you could even do ceiling mount brackets and rod.
4. Books are on display. Whether they are stacked on a coffee table or line a built-in shelf, they are always in her spaces.
5. Black is a part of her palette. Whether it’s in a statement piece, hardware, trim, or legs on furniture.
6. Displaying collections that have feel gathered over time. And these collections typically aren’t over-styled.
7. Use of organic materials that are timelss and evergreen. Nancy uses stone, slate, ceramics, terracotta, wood, marble, soapstone, and honed granite. All of these materials have stood the test of time.
8. Slipcovers, slipcovers, slipcovers. Whatever style of furniture, there are always slipcovers. They can be in a subtle print, strip, cotton, or linen.

9. Lamps with warm light only add to the ambiance. “Absolutely never, under any circumstance, turn on the overhead lighting.” That was a sound from TikTok, lol.
10. Flowers, greenery, and/or fresh fruit always add that finishing touch. It’s that touch that says people actually live here.
11. Mixing old and found with newer pieces subtly. Antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces are layered into all of her interiors. You will also find newer items that still feel storied.
12. Her style rule. She usually mixes predominately two styles with a sprinkle of whimsy with art and accessories. The ratio is around 70/30. Think Transitional/Organic or Traditional/Coastal or Cottage/Traditional, these are just a few that come to mind.
