Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic-What You Need To Know This Summer
If you are a huge Nancy Meyers fan like me, then you’ve heard of the term Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic. It originated a few years back from TikTok, of all places, and since then, it’s gone viral. So what makes up this style, and is it going anywhere anytime soon? The coastal grandmother is essentially Erica Barry from Something’s Gotta Give. And it’s here to stay. It’s what I would call a timeless, evergreen trend, which is the best kind because it will never go out. Think about it: this movie was made in 2003, that’s over twenty years ago, and we’re still talking about it.
What do we know and love about this main character? She’s understated but chic; she wears neutrals mostly, with a sprinkle of blue and black occasionally. She loves cooking and entertaining, but not late night unless it’s pancakes, LOL. She loves long walks on the beach and visits to the farmer’s market—that’s if she isn’t growing her own food. Linen is a staple in her closet, along with stripes, hats, oversized button-downs, cozy sweaters and rattan. Her playlist includes Etta James, Natalie Cole, Norah Jones, and Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few. It’s about enjoying the simple things like fresh flowers, even from the grocery store, collecting shells, and biking to town.

How does this style translate to the interior? I always say the best way to find your style is to look in your closet. And if we look in the Coastal Grandmother’s closet, we see a connection to home. There is linen, neutrals, rattan, collections, found items, things that have been passed on, touches of black, subtle patterns like stripes and gingham, and lush organic textures. We may also find fresh flowers in a pretty vase, books, storied items displayed, and a few slipcovers in her home.
This all seems nice, but is it attainable? Yes, yes!!! Follow these 12 steps and exhaust Target, thrift stores, Walmart, Amazon, shop your house, and make things. Once you know the aesthetic, it’s easy to wing it. Think soft, neutral, comfy, organic, nostalgic, preppy, and traveled with coastal elements such as a bowl of shells, touches of navy, and maybe black-and-white beach photography.
You can shop my AFFORDABLE Coastal Grandmother on Amazon. My picks have a budget in mind while channeling my inner coastal grandmother. I envision Jackie O and her Hyannis Port summer getaway—another example of this timeless style.
Happy day, friend!
