Playroom Makeover Using Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color of the Year
Hi there friends! Today is the day!! Not only do I get to share Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color of the Year today but I also get to show you part of our playroom makeover!!! My boys have told me multiple times that this is the coolest thing I have ever done in our house, that is all I need to hear to feel like a rock star. I used 2 Sherwin-Williams colors from the 2018 Unity palette and created a color blocked focal wall in their playroom. I have to say, I think its pretty cool too!
I know some of you took a guess this week on my Instagram as to what the COTY would be! Eek, I am super excited!!! Drumroll please….
Sherwin-Williams COTY for 2018 is….
SW 6496
Oceanside
This is the full Unity color palette from Sherwin-Williams. I can’t tell you enough how much I love this palette!
My goal for the playroom, as they are getting older, was to design a hang out and play area that felt hip, comfortable, creative and functional. We gave away a huge amount of toddler toys to charity and organized our 2 closets and bookcase to accommodate easy storage and clean up. We rearranged furniture, added a new pendant and did a hack on an existing piece we had in there. But the BIG detail I added in here was the modern color block focal wall. The great thing about this wall is it took less than a day and gives a bold & playful vibe to the space.
This is the before from Christmas a few years back….
A few during shots….
And the after….
I love the idea of wallpaper but I am not a wallpaper type of person, I am a paint person, through and through. So when I get these ideas & patterns in my head I try to figure out the best way to create it with paint.
This wall was perfect for creating a focal point. Now to decide what would feel fresh, coastal, a little modern and fit for 2 playful boys. While in bed one night I remembered the ceiling my dad painted in the late 70’s for my sister. He took this brazen & very vibrant orange and ran a thick stripe all the way through the middle. I thought how could I translate something like that for this room.
A color block wall came to mind as I knew I wanted a round mirror above the hacked bookcase. So I decided to paint the above 1/3 SW 9178 In the Navy & the bottom 2/3 of the wall SW 6496 Oceanside.
Before, for convenience we had the sofa smack up against the beautiful window seat that overlooks the bay. Watching TV and playing x box took precedence over pretty for many years. But as I began moving furniture for this makeover I realized I could face the sofa towards the window seat and still be able to view the TV.
I added fun designer pillows which I will share more about, along with some DIY details that will be in the next post.
We love our globes, so I thought I would display them. The small one was one I had when I was little, it’s a wee bit beat up but I like that my boys now use it.
The other walls I decided to leave white because I wanted this focal wall to pop. My go to white paint is SW 7005 Pure White. These windows will be getting flat roman shades and sconces will be added on either side.
The art around the room are originals, all done by us. I framed the art Shane & Jack made through the years to remind them that they are the creator of their canvas. I painted the abstracts on the left from craft paint a few years back.
By adding natural textures & whites to the bold hues it softens the space.
Jack decided to come and build Jenga while I was photographing:).
I honestly LOVE this space, it is fun, reflective of their happy spirits, playful & creative!
Don’t be afraid to take a chance on paint or get creative with a color you love, you may just find that color makes you happy!
Finally, congratulations to Erin Prohaska for winning the social giveaway I hosted for the Color of the Year earlier this week. She won a design consultation with me, five gallons of Sherwin-Williams paint & a gift card from West Elm.

Wow. I absolutely love the transformation. I love to paint, and one of the reasons why is seeing the before and after! Thanks so much for sharing! Love it!
Thank you so much Jessica!!
I love it! It came out beautifully!! What a great room to hang out it!
Thank you Kellie!!!
The room looks fantastic, really sophisticated. I’m curious if the wall looks as blue in person as it does on my screen. The swatch looks more green. Wondering if the navy pulls more blues from Oceanside? Great job, thanks for sharing. And congratulations Erica!
Thank you Jen! That is exactly how it reads in the space, the room is filled with natural light though. I have 4 large windows with an oval one on top. In a different light it will look different. I would get a sample, its such a pretty hue. Have a great day! Jen
Absolutely gorgeous. What a great place for your boys. Question…do you find you get enough light from the IKEA pendant?
Hi Leslie, Thank you! Yes, it does, way more than the previous light. Because of the open weave the room glows at night, it is really pretty! And you cant beat the $!!! Good luck, Jen
Thanks Jen. I purchased it and love it! I have had my eye on it for quite awhile and am so glad I finally bought it. Leslie
