Easy Rustic Barnboard Sign & Simple Touches of Spring

Hi Friends.
Spring is in the air, yay!

The weekend here in NY was just extraordinary.
We had sun, it was warm(er), the birds were singing,
what could be better after being cooped up all winter.

To celebrate the start of the new season I thought I would share details for this easy rustic “NEST” sign.

Micheal’s has these large MDF letters.
I love the size & price, they are ONLY $2.99.

The first layer I aged with a vinegar & steel wool solution. Leave a hunk of the finest steel wool in sealed jar for 1-3 days or until dissolved.
After & Before
Then applied 1 coat of Robin’s Egg Blue acrylic craft paint.
 Let dry.
I sanded each letter with a fine sandpaper & then applied the aging solution over the top, then wiped off the excess.

Not bad for around $12, right?
Here are some other simple touches of Spring that I have sprinkled around our family room.

  1. Your letters came out great! Your technique is interesting…not sure how to make the aging solution though and would love to try it. I love all of the signs of spring in your pretty living room, the eggs in the cloche are so sweet!

    XO,
    Jane

  2. Just found your lovely site and have been ogling the pics of your family room. I have a question about your Target lamp (that sits beside the silhouette shots). I spotted this lamp yesterday and want to buy it. Did you paint the lamp with the ASCP French Linen. I noticed that you used this color quite a bit in your family room and it looks a little different in color.

  3. Your NEST letters are great, Jen! Love how they turned out. I saw those letters myself the other day. I was looking to get NY to add to a gallery wall I’m doing but they didn’t have the “Y”. All your Spring touches look lovely and I always love seeing your family room!

  4. You have managed to make something new look fabulously old, I love your Nest letters! And your Spring touches are just beautiful 🙂

  5. Love the color you painted the nest sign with. I have done the steel wool and vinegar solution too, and I like to share the good news that people don’t have to wait for it to turn brown to use it. The chemical reaction starts immediately (you can see it when there are teeny little bubbles in the jar. Anything after this is just plain old rust and it stinks). I left mine overnight and it was still clear, used it the next day and it worked great.

  6. Well now that is two projects I plan to do.. your coffee table, and the letters, though I might do my letters in green as my walls will hopefully soon be Robins Egg Blue. I am off to buy some steel wool and other supplies! Thanks for always inspiring… and when I finally post these projects on my blog, I will for sure give a link back to yours with loads of kudos and thanks!

  7. The letters are great, thanks for sharing the process, I will definitely tuck that one away! Love all your spring touches too. I find myself wanting to add robin’s egg blue everywhere this time of year 🙂

  8. Love it! I always find myself standing in front of letters at michaels, but haven’t a clue what I want to do with them so I just walk away lol…this is really cute for spring:)

  11. If your house was mine, I think I would quit and just take pictures of my house all day long. Pause to fluff pillows, light candles, play with the mantle and just smile at my things. Untill then, I will just look at your house… At work 😉
