Coastal Aunt Aesthetic-Putting A Name To This Timeless Trend

Meet the new aesthetic taking summer by storm—the Coastal Aunt. She’s the prequel to the Coastal Grandmother. She’s a girl’s girl, chic and well-traveled. She may be single or not, but one thing is for certain: she’s cool. She can pair pieces from your grandmother’s closet with ones that are trending for a look all her own. While she knows a few good dinner recipes, cocktails and appetizers are more her vibe. Effortless is the entirety of this aesthetic.

If I had to describe this aesthetic in a person/style icon, it would be Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I was in my twenties when she came on the scene, and I was in awe of her style. It felt like a collected look that I couldn’t unpack even if I tried. But what I liked best about her style was the timeless sensibility. And that still holds true today.

Like her counterpart, the Coastal Aunt favors stripes, linen, any shade of blue, and cozy knits, but she also loves a good black dress, wool, velvet, and plaid. She loves mixing thrift store finds with current trends, whether with fashion or home design. It would be like if Serena & Lily met a really cool thrift store and had a baby.

She likes hosting dinner parties, walking to the beach with an actual glass of wine, and riding her bike with a mug of coffee in hand. As my mother would say, she marches to the beat of her own drum.

This type of aesthetic can throw a get-together at the last minute with little stress on perfection, yet it always seems to come together seamlessly. From writing characters in my books over the last six years, I’ll go a step further and say she knows herself really well, oozes confidence, and likes herself a lot. I really love that about her.
