I Painted My French Doors Black + What TikTok Had To Say

Well, I did it. I finally had the guts to paint my beautiful white French doors black. Sometimes it’s the smallest risks that yields the greatest reward. Although it took me a while to actually do it, it is just paint at the end of the day. Right?! The leap paid off, I’m smitten.

This was the before. You can see, they’re classic and crisp, ideal for a beachy vibe. But… I was looking for a change.

I had a ton of questions about paint color, what I used to prevent the paint from getting on the glass and how many coats.

After a lot of paint research I went with Sherwin-Williams Black Magic. I used Masking Liquid for the glass. You paint it on and then exacto knife it off after painting. It will actually peel off the glass. FYI, apply a good coat, it will be easier to peel. I found it at Sherwin-Williams, all the other stores were sold out.

I painted half at a time, just in case I changed my mind. Also, it gave a better visual. I bought a paint with a built in primer, so for the most part it was 2 coats of the Black Magic in the pearl finish.

I decide the best way to tackle the frame was to only paint the inset details. Which I then left the molding white. It was a good call.

It’s very dramatic. And yes, I know that this trend may end soon like my white kitchen. But, the important thing with trends is that if you like it that’s all that matters.

Okay, so after posting it to TikTok it went viral, which was really nice since I’m trying to grow on that platform. But… everyone had a lot to say about… my door knobs. Yes, you read correct. You have to check out some of the comments, they were actually fighting with one another in the thread.

At the end of the day, I like the glass knobs. I may rub gold on the silver areas but I will take my time with it. And that’s okay. I’ve learned over the years that not being in a rush saves time & money.
