DIY Woven Pendant Light Without Electricity-Torared Ikea Hack

This light hack is going to blow your mind! I finally figured out how to bring more overhead lighting into my living room. How you ask? By hanging a pendant, light without electricity! Friends, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about a project! It’s a creative solution to the ongoing lighting issue I’ve had in this room since we moved in ten years ago. They rebuilt my house in 2005, down to the studs and built a second floor but didn’t put high hats in or wiring for a chandelier or pendant. I’ve tried everything; a hanging light, table lamps, floor lamps, but since the room is so large it didn’t light the entire space, just an area.

The rattan basket shade is Torared from Ikea. They were sold out at my location, but my friend luckily had one in her shop. They have a 14″ one and a 22″ one, this is the larger.

I wanted the light fixture to look authentic and real. I found a wooden disk in my basement and a dowel. I drilled a hole, then glued them together with Gorilla Glue. I let that dry for about 5 hours.

After it was secure I spray painted it black and added an eye hook to the bottom to attach it.

Okay, onto the best part, the remote control battery operated lights.

The next thing, attaching it to the ceiling. I found Command Velcro Stripes for up to 16lbs. With the bulb, maybe the entire thing weighs 5 lbs. I bought screws in case but it’s very stable without.

Be sure to let the adhesive set for an hour before attaching the shade.

After the shade was secured I added the bulb. It has an anchor and is magnetic, so it slides onto an arm but just to be sure I secured with wire. It’s very easy!

What do you think? I’m head over heals!!! I also want to mention, this would be great for outside too. If you do use outdoors, secure with screws. The Command Stripes may not like the moisture.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this genius idea! I LOVE it, especially for my patio. I might weave ribbon around a basket (even a wire basket) to hide the bulb. And i could easily make ruched fabric sleeves for the dowel rod to match decor, holidays, etc. Oh goodness, Jen, my mind is spinning! Thanks again!

  3. Nice one Jen!!

    1. Hi Olivia, its a low light, moody. Not very bright but I’m sure you could find a brighter battery operated bulb. Good luck, Jen
