Rustic Tween Room Reveal

Rustic Tween Room Reveal 4

Today I am finally revealing Shane’s Tween Room! If you remember I shared his mood board a few months ago, so sorry to keep you all in suspense for this long. Shane just turned 11, so I wanted to give him a space that felt comfortable & cool as he heads into his teen years. He really wanted a loft bed, a couch and fun seating options (for when his friends come over) along with some rustic touches. There is still a love for Star Wars and anything sports related so we layered that in as well. I partnered with ATG to turn this once uninspiring boys room into a tween’s dream space and we both couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out!

Rustic Boys Tween Room Makeover-Adding Dimensional Objects To The Wall

As you can see below this room has seen many changes from when we moved in. When your kids are little it’s hard to decide on direction, I think that is why I held off for so long. They change and grow so fast & the things they love today are often not what they love tomorrow, so I didn’t want to get stuck, especially in a theme.

What do you think? Good change right?! Two things I knew I wanted in this room when I started, 1. black & white buffalo checks and light walls. I also had a dresser I wanted to paint but the rest of the design plan was wide open.

[The FULL source list is at the bottom of this post, if I miss anything please let me know.]

This buffalo print helped bring the whole rustic-urban color palette together, art is great like that.

Originally I was going to paint his bunk beds Cyberspace, like the dresser but after getting Jack’s Bunk Beds I realized his old bunk beds were way too small and he was getting way too big for them.

I found these hexagon shelves and stained them with Minwax Early American, which works great with the other wood tones in the room. I added a few dimensional objects while keeping it simple. I do love the Humble & Kind print I found on Etsy, the words to the Tim McGraw song say it all.

The walls are Sherwin-Williams Pure White on the top and Repose Gray on the bottom. I also used the gray to paint the moldings and doors, this took a lot of time but worth every second!

I need to tell you how amazing these drapery rods are, not only do they look great and give a modern feel but they are sturdy!!!

Lets talk about the rug. I was a little nervous because it was so reasonable, well let me tell you, this rug is a great quality and the pattern is soft enough to go with any décor.

I needed extra storage in here for baseball cards, sports equipment and things he has collected through the years so I found a vintage army trunk and added wood boxes on top.

I have so many favorites in this room but this light fixture, ahh!! Stunning, right?!

The black & white buffalo check fabric I bought for a steal {source below} and made my own drapes and pillows. The blinds are another incredible deal, I have shopped around for woven blinds and these are pretty much custom, they let you choose a width every inch, which is great if you want to hang them inside your window.

The GOOD VIBES sign is an easy DIY, I bought the letters from the craft store and sprayed them with black chalk paint for a matte finish. The gold light hanging from the bed is from Etsy.

  1. Love the room, Jen! I’ve always been a huge fan of buffalo checks and I love how you paired a picture of a buffalo near the curtains. Genius! Pinned the light fixture .. so cute!

  2. I LOVE his new bedroom. You did such an amazing job making it look so rich and inviting and grown up. LOVE the buffalo check and the artwork. I bet he loves his new space. xx

  3. This looks great! Did you paint the dresser? If so what color did you use?

  4. What finish (satin, eggshell, etc.) did you use for the dresser? Did you hand paint it with a brush, or did you spray it? It’s just looks so good!

  5. Love this …. love love love. But where is all his ‘stuff’? My son is 8 and I want to redo his room, but obviously there’s a practical boy function missing … toys, stuff, NERF guns, etc. Do you hide it somewhere? Nice job. Thanks for the inspiration.

  6. Jen, I just wanted to thank you for commenting after Orlando on your instagram acct. It meant so much to me as I have a (lovely) gay brother who lives in (South Beach) Florida. I checked all my fave’ blogs and instagrams and was so disappointed by so few commenting. I mean just say something like “Pray for Orlando” or something for goodness sake! I appreciate your sweet heart and am now only following those who walk the walk not just talk the talk. Love your blog and instagram and home. ❤️

    1. Thank you Lisa:) Often when we share personal thoughts we aren’t sure how it will be received, so this means so much to me. This is such an important message for me to share and have had experiences with people I love as well. It always starts at home, my parents were/are the kindest of people and taught me this and I want nothing more for my boys to know and live this beautiful message as they journey through life. Have a wonderful day! Jen

  7. What a cool, fun room, Jen! I know any boy (or me!) would love this room 😉 You did a fabulous job as usual.
    Hugs, Jamie

  8. Hi there … how is the bed holding up? I want to get it for our son (8) but it looks a little thin or not so sturdy? How’s it working for you guys?

    1. Hi Teresa, it is fine, a little squeaky from time to time. If you screw into the wall it will be much better. Have a great weekend, Jen
