Hi, my name is Alicia and I blog over at A Burst of Beautiful. My husband, Nick, and I started A Burst of Beautiful with the encouragement of family and friends to share our creativity and passion for living a beautiful life.

We have always been creative individuals. Nick’s strength is in creating and building. He is always willing to embrace my imaginative and inspired projects with an energetic eagerness. He loves working with his hands and can create almost anything I ask him for.

He is also the chef of the family. While I enjoy cooking, Nick has a passion for being in the kitchen, especially if it involves baking. Most of the recipes you find on our blog are his creations.

I’ve always loved interior design and most recently discovered my passion for blogging. I strive to share creative and inspiring ideas to create a beautiful home, and it is my belief that a home can be both beautiful and humble. It is about embracing the home you have and decorating it with love and purpose. I find the homes that are furnished with handmade and crafted treasures, vintage finds and items that bring your family joy are the most beautiful homes.

I am proud of the home we have built together, it is a sweet reminder of the love, creativity and memories we share. We have thrown all of our creative energy into designing a home we love and I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into our life.

What is the best way to describe your style?

I’ve almost always struggled with this. I find I am drawn to many different styles, even if it isn’t a particular look I would like in my own home, I can appreciate the design and beauty of each.

It wasn’t until I began blogging that I really narrowed down my design style. I’ve quickly come to learn that I am drawn to bright, light spaces with a mix of rustic farmhouse style and modern streamlined pieces. I love a neutral home infused with subtle hints of color, my favorite being any shade of blue.

I prefer to keep the rooms in our home simple and classic.

Which room is your favorite & why?

My favorite room is definitely our kitchen, it truly is the heart of our home. Not only is it the place we gather to cook family meals, create crafts and projects or take in the gorgeous sunset after a long day, it’s also the room in our home we have worked the hardest on.

When we moved into our home the kitchen was dated and laid out poorly. It definitely wasn’t the kitchen of our dreams, but we knew with a little (ok, a lot!) of hard work it could be. You can see our Kitchen: Before & After here.

What room was the most fun to design?

Definitely the nursery! There is nothing more exciting than anticipating the arrival of a sweet new baby, and we had so much fun designing our daughter’s room.

We opted for the ultimate surprise and did not find out the gender of our baby. But being the Type-A personality that I am, I wanted to have her room complete by the time she arrived, so we designed a completely gender-neutral nursery (you can see my design plans here).

We love the end result, it’s such a soothing and tranquil space, filled with sweet keepsakes, like beautiful blankets knit by my grandmother and aunt and a fun DIY Pom Pom mobile I made just for her.

Any projects or rooms that were challenging?

I struggled with our living room and dining for a long time. Being a long and narrow open-concept space made it difficult to furnish and decorate. As much of a struggle as it was, I think I finally got it right. It now feels like the cozy and inviting living space I was hoping for, you can read all about it here.

Favorite moment or memory in your house?

There are so many! This is the first home my husband and I have owned together, so it encompasses so many beautiful memories. From the time we signed the papers and actually moved in was such a whirlwind, I remember feeling like our life together was just beginning as we made this first big commitment to one another. Since then there have been some very special moments – the evening Nick proposed to me over my favorite meal, the morning we found out we were expecting and, of course, bringing our sweet baby girl home for the first time. Among all of those momentous moments, there are just as many small memories that make me smile – family meals around our dining room table, holiday traditions and celebrations and quiet evenings shared with friends.

What makes your home feel like home?

That’s an easy one – my family. I’ve always loved the quote “Home is wherever I am with you”. First and foremost, your home should be filled with the people you love.

What makes your home meaningful to you?

I think it’s so important to build a home that reflects your personality and the personality of your family. Your home should make you feel sheltered and comfortable and it should evoke memories and happiness.

A home comes alive when it is filled with pieces that speak to you and pieces that have special meaning. To me, that is furniture that’s been passed down from generation to generation, photographs of your most cherished memories on display and items that you have collected from your travels.

It is my goal to create a meaningful home for my family, but it isn’t something that happens overnight, it takes time and a love of home.
